Stressed possessive determiners (mío, mía, suyo, tuyo, etc.) can also take the form of pronouns when they replace a noun (instead of modifying it), with some modifications.

Spanish

English

- ¿Esta falda es mía, ¿verdad?

- No, esa es la mía, aquella es la tuya.

- This skirt is mine, isn't it?
- No, this is mine, that's yours.

Reviewing Stressed Possessive Determiners

Rule 1. Stressed possessive demonstratives accompany a noun and refer to something that belongs to someone. Therefore, they must agree in number with this object. The are always placed after the verb.

Spanish

English

- Las sudaderas son nuestras.

- The sweatshirts are ours.

How to Use Possessive Pronouns

Rule 2. Possessive pronouns are used to replace the noun that designates what is possessed and, as with all pronouns, avoid repetition of that noun.

Spanish

English

No encuentro mi pluma, ¿puedo usar la tuya?

I can't find my pen, can I use yours?

In this example, both speakers know that they are talking about a pen. In this case, the possessive pronoun refers to a pen that the other person has and the speaker needs to borrow.

Possessive Pronouns Form

Rule 3. The possessive pronouns are the same as the stressed possessive determiners. The only difference is that they require a definite article.
