Singular Indefinite Articles

Rule 1: In singular, the French use the article un for a masculine noun and une for a feminine noun.

Rule 2: Des is used for nouns in the plural form no matter the gender.

Rule 3: In a negative sentence, the indefinite articles un, une, des become ne … pas de.

He has a cat, he has no cat.

Rule 4: If de is in front of a vowel or silent "h" it becomes d'.

Il n'y a pas d'oiseaux ici.
